Search is Declining While Social Has More Than Doubled

Search is a mature channel and as such probably won’t grow in the coming year, while social has doubled over the past year and is expected to grow even more in 2014.

As a small business owner or a solopreneur with limited time and budget, you can expect a better ROI (return on investment) from social media channels to establish your authority within your field. Your social web presence is just that, social. To start:

  • read articles from thought leaders such as Brian Clark (Copyblogger), Mitch Joel ( Ctrl, Alt Delete) or Brian Solis (What’s the Future?)
  • set up an account in the social media channel you feel most comfortable with
  • watch and listen to leaders in your field, follow them, retweet or share their articles
  • grow your audience slowly with quality contact
  • measure regularly to ensure you’re getting results
  • once you have a feel for how to communicate with your readers, create a plan to expand your reach on other social media channels
